Canal Exhibition at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings

A special exhibition at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings organised by the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust is highlighting the role of canals with a focus on the Shrewsbury area.

A number of local canal organisations – including the Friends of the Montgomery Canal – have exhibition space to showcase the history of canals not only in Shrewsbury but further afield in Shropshire.

Said Christine Palin, Chairman of the ‘Friends’: “The exhibition is a great opportunity to show the progress which has been made restoring the Montgomery Canal, illustrate the plans for future restoration and raise the funds needed. The Friends aim to increase support for the canal, recruit new members and encourage more volunteers to help in many different ways.

The Shropshire Boatmen sang a number of canal songs to launch the exhibition.

The Friends of the Montgomery Canal along with the Shropshire Union Canal Society and the Shrewsbury District & North Wales Branch of the Inland Waterways Association, are working together to promote the continued restoration work taking place to ensure the future of the canal and the community alongside.”

Other organisations represented in the exhibition include the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust, the Shropshire Union Canal Society, flyboat Saturn with a ‘flatpack’ boathorse, the Shrewsbury District & North Wales Branch of the Inland Waterways Association and the Shropshire Wildlife Trust.

The free exhibition will be open in The Dye House from the 23rd of March 2024 until the 19th of April 2024 inclusive, with opening times from 10:00 to 16:00.

Closed Mondays and Tuesdays (except for the school Easter Holiday).
