Could you care for your local canal?

Two community based voluntary organisations that work on the Montgomery Canal in the border area between Welshpool and Oswestry are calling on local people to join them.

You will know that much voluntary work goes into restoring the old sections of the Montgomery Canal but volunteers are equally responsible for much ongoing care and maintenance of the canal.

Help keep the towpath clear

We often see comments about the vegetation on the Montgomery Canal towpath and how it can impede enjoyment of the canal. Could you volunteer to help keep them clear?

Most canal towpaths are owned by the Canal & River Trust (CRT) and so if you have questions related to the vegetation on the canal the best approach is to go to https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/contact-us/reporting-litter-weeds-and-pollution.

People’s Postcode Lottery funds trees

Over 1500 trees were planted by volunteer groups during the first week of March 2022.

The Canal and River Trust received funding from the People’s Postcode Lottery and commissioned Steven Lees from Land & Heritage consultants to work with volunteers in three areas on the Montgomery Canal.

A cut above the rest

Four members of the TRAMPS group recently attended a Lantra small tree felling and crosscutting course run by Phil Dunford Chainsaw Training.

The team were keen to gain the Lantra qualifications so that they would be able to quickly and safely remove dangerous and fallen trees on the canal for Canal & River Trust. They had to fund the course fees themselves but felt it was worth doing for such a very valuable qualification.
