You can enter for one or two sections or attempt all three – as a team or on your own! Entry fees are:
• Full triathlon: adults £33; juniors (incl. anyone in full time education) £16.50.
• One or two sections only: adults £13 per section; juniors £6.50 per section
Registrants of individual or team entries must agree to acceptance of risk for the entrants. Entries for unaccompanied under-16s must be made by an adult who takes full responsibility for them.
Back Lane pay & display car park is next to the START in Newtown. Cyclists can park their cars there – for the day if necessary. Free car parking is available all day at the Pool Quay canoeing/walking transition area.
Free supervised storage is available for bikes at the end of the Cycling section at Whitehouse and for canoes/kayaks at the end of the Canoeing section at Pool Quay.
After the event, free transport is available for entrants from the FINISH back to the START in Newtown, via the Pool Quay and Whitehouse transition areas (although entrants will have to transport their own bikes and canoes after the event). Transport to the START in the morning is not provided this year.
Bike helmets must be worn by all cyclists and buoyancy aids must be worn by all those on the water (canoeists etc). Helmets are recommended for all those on the water and must be worn by children aged under 11.
Entrants who bring their own canoe, kayak or paddleboard can drop them off at the cycling/canoeing transition area at Whitehouse on the morning of the event.
A limited number of open canoes and paddleboards plus kit were available to hire from an external provider. Canoes are not available from the Friends of the Montgomery Canal this year.
The Triathlon follows the route of the Montgomery Canal
The cycling section is along cycleway-standard towpath, with a short section beside the river Severn and over a bridge; the canoeing section is generally rural (there are reeds and nesting water birds) but passes through Welshpool and past or through two locks (where volunteers will be available to help); the walking section is generally flat but some lengths are unsuitable for wheelchairs (there are several stiles, tree roots and possible livestock en route). There are five road crossings for cyclists and four for walkers – all controlled by marshals.
First Aiders will be available throughout the event. Toilets will be available at the Start in Newtown, Whitehouse, Pool Quay, Llanymynech Wharf Visitor Centre and at Crickheath.
Entrants are recommended to bring their own refreshments but water is provided at the end of the cycling and canoeing sections; and warm drinks and energy bars at the Finish. Refreshments can also be bought at Llanymynech Wharf Visitor Centre.
The organisers aim to ensure it is safe and enjoyable for everyone by allowing faster cyclists to set off first at the start.
The Triathlon is organised by the Friends of the Montgomery Canal and is supported by the Canal & River Trust in aid of the restoration of the Montgomery Canal. Donations are welcome – you can add a donation of £1, £5, £15 or £25 to your Triathlon payment if you wish – remember to tick the box on the Entry Form.
If you would like to raise funds for the canal restoration yourself by being sponsored for your entry, you can down load a sponsorship form here.
All entrants who complete a section will receive a commemorative medallion made from local slate
