Friends of the Montgomery Canal – the membership section of the Montgomery Waterways Restoration Trust – Join us!
‘The Friends’ – the membership section of the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust – was formed to provide information and allow people to get involved with activities along the course of the canal. Over the years, membership has grown to well over 300 members. The Friends’ committee is made up of volunteers from amongst the membership and the Trustess of the Trust are unpaid volunteers.
The Friends actively support the restoration of the canal, organising or supporting events and activities which promote the canal and enable people to enjoy the many and varied leisure opportunities it offers.
You can join the Friends as a household or as a corporate member.
The Friends’ principal event is the popular annual Montgomery Canal Triathlon, which raises funds for the restoration. It is a great day out for families and experienced triathletes who can cycle, paddle and walk along the canal from Newtown in Powys to near Oswestry in Shropshire in one day.
Other Friends events include:
- walks along and around the canal
- fundraising ‘lockwinds’, helping boaters through a lock, selling cakes and other items and rattling a collecting bucket
- an annual Sunday Lunch, giving members the opportunity to socialise near the canal.
The Friends are also regularly involved with water-based festivals and other events, both locally and further afield, to represent and promote the Montgomery Canal and raise funds for the restoration.
