News about the rebuilding of Schoolhouse Bridge – towpath and road diversions
Further steps are being taken towards starting the rebuilding of Schoolhouse Bridge, both of which have been made public. There is not yet a date for the actual works to start but this is expected to be in January 2023.
Canal & River Trust have announced that the towpath can be closed between 1 October 2022 and 30 September 2023. There will be a towpath diversion around the construction site at the bridge.
Shropshire Council are publicising that the road (Long Lane) can be closed from 10 October 2022 to 30 September 2023. The public road diversion is via Crickheath Bridge. Local businesses will be able to use the temporary trackway around the construction site – which volunteers have built.
The closures are not expected to last until 30 September 2023. These are cautionary long stop dates. At present, the construction programme is expected to last 22 weeks from the start date. Warning signs will be put out before the road closure and diversion actually start.
This will be a significant next step in the restoration of the Canal. The money for this aspect of the Canal restoration is being raised by the Restore the Montgomery Canal! group. The latest Appeal has raised a lot but more is needed and, with promised match funding, the next £10k donated (with Gift Aid) could be worth £22.5k! Donations will be welcome and can be made at:
