Volunteer at the Wharf

As a community organisation, Llanymynech Canal Wharf relies on its team of volunteers to share their enthusiasm and love of the Montgomery Canal, its history and wildlife.

Are you looking for an opportinity to share your passion of the inland waterways, heritage or local history with our visitors?

We are a small team but with a common aim of sharing information about the Montgomery Canal and encouraging people to learn more about its industrial heritage, ecology and to experience being on the water.

Could you bring your skills and knowledge to help us? Or perhaps you want to find out more about what volunteering might offer, then we’d love to talk.

There are many ways you can help us.

From welcoming visitors into the visitor centre or aboard the George Watson Buck narrowboat, telling the story of the Montgomery Canal and the local area to helping us look after the boat, to serving light refreshments in the historic canal stable block, there’s an opportunity for everyone.

We cannot do what we do without our dedicated volunteers

If you have a RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate we would welcome new skippers to the team. If you are experienced crew, we have roles on the boat available and we are hoping, in the future, to train more skippers from amongst our crew.

If you would like to find out more about being a volunteer at Llanymynech Canal Wharf, we would love to hear from you. Unfortunately, we are not running boat trips at the moment, but we are still interested in hearing from you if you could help in the visitor centre, gift shop and serving light refreshments. We hope to runn boat trips next year, so it would be great to hear from you so we can train new recruits for 2027. You can email us on news@themontgomerycanal.org.uk and we will be in touch!
