Montgomery Canal restoration driving growth in visitor numbers and local spend, new research shows

Waterways charity, Canal & River Trust, together with Shropshire Council and the Montgomery Canal Partnership, has welcomed new research showing that investment in restoring the Montgomery Canal in Shropshire is delivering additional economic benefits. Visitor numbers are rising, more people are staying longer, and these longer visits are helping to boost local spending.

Narrowboat challenge at Llanymynech Canal Wharf

Volunteers who look after the George Watson Buck narrowboat at Llanymynech Canal Wharf on the Montgomery Canal between Wales and England are asking local people and businesses to consider helping them refurbish the boat for future generations.

The volunteers operate the wheelchair accessible trip boat during the summer as a popular local tourist attraction.

Say Happy New Year at Llanymynech Canal Wharf

Enjoy a New Year walk at Llanymynech Heritage Area and visit Llanymynech Canal Wharf.

Volunteers at the popular cross border attraction on the Montgomery Canal at Llanymynech are starting 2026 as they mean to go on – fundraising for the upkeep and refurbishment of their wheelchair accessible boat, the George Watson Buck.

Shropshire Council team visits restoration work

In November, the Restore the Montgomery Canal appeal group hosted a team from Shropshire Council on an introductory tour of the Montgomery Canal restoration.

Although political control of the council changed hands at the local elections back in May this was the first diary opportunity for senior councillors to view the work of the SUCS volunteers during one of their work party weekends.

Another successful Montgomery Canal Triathlon

The Montgomery Canal was crowded on Saturday 6 September 2025 for the annual Montgomery Canal Triathlon organised by the Friends of the Montgomery Canal in aid of the canal’s restoration.

The 149 people who took part had the choice of entering one, two or three sections ‒ by bike, by canoe and on foot ‒ and over a hundred completed all three.
