Shropshire Council team visits restoration work

In November, the Restore the Montgomery Canal appeal group hosted a team from Shropshire Council on an introductory tour of the Montgomery Canal restoration.

Although political control of the council changed hands at the local elections back in May this was the first diary opportunity for senior councillors to view the work of the SUCS volunteers during one of their work party weekends.

MP and Mayor of Newtown to start Montgomery Canal Triathlon

Cyclists on the Montgomery canal Traithlon start line

The Montgomery Canal Triathlon, organised by the Friends of the Montgomery Canal, will be started by local MP Steve Witherden and Pete Lewington, Mayor of Newtown.


The Montgomery Canal and towpath will welcome cyclists, walkers and canoeists on Saturday 6 September 2025 who are competing in the Montgomery canal Traiathlon.

May 2025 work party report

The Shropshire Union Canal Society which organises volunteer work parties to restore the Montgomery Canal by Crickheath in Shropshire have published their latest report of work undertaken.

“Another highly productive work party”, that is how restoration project manager, Tom Fulda described the May Bank Holiday weekend. Helped by the prolonged dry and sunny spell, profiling, lining and blocking continued to be the main event but as usual, a variety of other tasks were undertaken.

Montgomery Canal Forum reviews restoration canal boats and Net Zero

The Montgomery Canal Forum in Newtown on 4 April was well attended by local authority representatives, the Canal & River Trust and interested members of the public.

The meeting, in the new Hafan yr Afon centre, saw presentations from Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust Chairman Michael Limbrey, the Canal & River Trust Head of External Programme Delivery Jason Leach and David Struckett from the Sustainable Boating Group of the Inland Waterways Association.
