Canal Exhibition at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings

A special exhibition at Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings organised by the Shrewsbury & Newport Canals Trust is highlighting the role of canals with a focus on the Shrewsbury area.

A number of local canal organisations – including the Friends of the Montgomery Canal – have exhibition space to showcase the history of canals not only in Shrewsbury but further afield in Shropshire.

A Successful Year for Montgomery Canal Volunteers

Volunteers from the Shropshire Union Canal Society (SUCS) have been looking back over 2023 with pride.

Dave Carter, SUCS Chairman said: “Last year will go down in the society’s history as a great year, we had funding from many sponsors, especially the National Heritage Lottery Fund, but without our team of volunteers who turned out in all weathers and worked so hard, none of this would have been possible. The challenge now is to keep this rate of progress going in 2024 but I think, as Tom Fulda takes over as project manager, this is assured”.

Traditional skills on the Montgomery Canal

Traditional skills are bringing a tramway wharf back to life on the Montgomery Canal.

In a world stuffed with technology it’s great to see that traditional skills and methods are still being used to great effect and this is true at Grinshill Stone Quarry where masons are dressing large coping stones to replace broken ones at Crickheath Wharf, on the Montgomery canal, just south of Oswestry.

Award win for Crickheath

Montgomery Canal - Crickheath Award

Having been shortlisted in August, the current phase of restoration of the Montgomery Canal at Crickheath has now won the 2021 Ground Engineering – Community Engagement Award.

The Ground Engineering awards are the premier national event for geotechnics, engineering geology and geo-environmental engineering. This award is made jointly to Arcadis consulting engineers, Canal & River Trust as the client and the Shropshire Union Canal Society as the contractor.
