Another successful Montgomery Canal Triathlon

The Montgomery Canal was crowded on Saturday 6 September 2025 for the annual Montgomery Canal Triathlon organised by the Friends of the Montgomery Canal in aid of the canal’s restoration.

The 149 people who took part had the choice of entering one, two or three sections ‒ by bike, by canoe and on foot ‒ and over a hundred completed all three.

Canal charity receives funding for Montgomery Canal in Welshpool

Glandŵr Cymru, the Canal & River Trust in Wales, has received a grant from the Nature Networks Fund to maintain a restored stretch of the Montgomery Canal near Welshpool.

The £250,000 grant will help the UK’s largest waterways charity to protect rare plant and animal species by removing areas of silt and dense vegetation growing over the channel.

Volunteers return after the Lockdown

Before the lockdown, the Shropshire Union Canal Society had been making good progress restoring the canal between Lloyds Animal Feeds compound and Crickheath despite the heavy rain at the beginning of March.

During their absence however, the canal had quickly become overgrown and so volunteers had to start by clearing weeds and a fallen tree on the first working party which took place on 24th – 26th July.

Canal & River Trust awards grants to local charities

Saturn on the Montgomery Canal

We are pleased to see that two charities with close connections to the Montgomery Canal have been awarded grants from the Canal & River Trust.

Thanks to donations from hundreds of people to the Canal & River Trust’s appeal to support small waterway-based charities, the Trust has been able to award £31,500 in grants shared across 43 local charities based on inland waterways in England and Wales. The Heulwen Trust in Welshpool and the Shropshire Union Flyboat Restoration Society, which looks after Saturn, the Shroppie Fly-Boat have both received awards.

Construction of new commercial premises near Welshpool

The Friends of the Montgomery Canal have submitted their considerations to Powys County Council regarding a planning application for the construction of new commercial premises at The Moors, Buttington, Welshpool, Powys, SY21 9JR

In principle, we have no objection to the development of land between Buttington Cross and the Moors Farm and would support sympathetic developments which enhance the growth of visitor numbers to the canal.
