Glandŵr Cymru to tackling the rapid spread of Water Soldier

Funding set to help canal charity tackle threat of invasive plant on the Montgomery Canal

With Invasive Species Week (22–28 June) underway, Glandŵr Cymru, the Canal & River Trust in Wales, is tackling the rapid spread of an invasive plant along the Montgomery Canal.

No Montgomery Canal Triathlon in 2026

Sadly, it’s been announced that there will be no Montgomery Canal Triathlon this year and a new appeal for volunteers to complete the organising team for 2027 has been launched.

The Friends of the Montgomery Canal concluded with regret that after losing some key members of the organising team they have not been able to hold the Montgomery Canal Triathlon this year.

Successful Montgomery Canal Forum 2026

A busy Montgomery Canal Forum heard news of projects great and small contributing to the restoration of the Montgomery Canal in Shropshire and Mid Wales.

The Forum is organised and run by the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust and this year it saw a return to the premises of Aico in Oswestry.

Montgomery Canal restoration progress

Montgomery Canal with blocks in the channel and trees next to the towpath

Phase 2 of the restoration is taking shape. Over 5 days a great deal was achieved.

The latest work party organised by the Shropshire Union Canal Society recorded great success in lining and blocking a further stretch of canal towards Schoolhouse Bridge in Shropshire.
