Navigation Pale Ale for the Monty!

Monty’s Brewery based in the Welsh town of Montgomery, has launched Navigation Pale Ale to support the ongoing restoration of the Montgomery Canal.

The Montgomery Canal has recently celebrated the opening of another restored section to Crickheath Basin while Schoolhouse Bridge, another 300 yds along the course of the canal, is currently being rebuilt – so it’s great to see a local business supporting the restoration effort.

The latest appeal by the Restore the Montgomery Canal! team, made necessary by rising costs after the delays of Covid, will be boosted by a supporter who will once again match every £1 donated.

Welcome for Mid-Wales Growth Deal bid for Montgomery Canal Restoration

Announcement that the Montgomery Canal is one of the projects that the Growing Mid Wales Board is submitting to the UK and Welsh Governments for support welcomed.

The Restore the Montgomery Canal! Group – which brings together volunteer charities which have worked for years for the revival of the Montgomery Canal – has welcomed the latest development.

Successful Montgomery Canal Triathlon enjoyed by all

After the difficulties of planning through the time of Coronavirus restrictions, the Montgomery Canal Triathlon run by the Friends of the Montgomery Canal on Saturday 4 September was a most successful event.

While many of the 117 entrants were from Shropshire and Montgomeryshire, others came from across the British mainland, some over 200 miles to reach the canal. The oldest to complete all 28 miles were over 80 and the youngest was under 10 years of age.

Shropshire Councillors visit the Monty

Following the bid by Powys County Council and CRT (Canal & River Trust) for grant funds to restore sections of the Montgomery Canal in Powys, the unrestored section of the canal in Shropshire was visited by Lezley Picton, Leader of Shropshire Council and Cecilia Motley, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Tourism.

After a trip on the ‘George Watson Buck’ trip-boat at Llanymynech Wharf Visitor Centre, the visitors were taken to Crickheath where volunteers of the Shropshire Union Canal Society have been working to restore one of the most challenging sections they have faced, shown round by the Society’s Project Manager David Carter.
