Minister Visits the Montgomery Canal 2022

Rebecca Pow, the Minister serving as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, recently made a visit to the wharf in Welshpool accompanied by Craig Williams MP.

Rebecca Pow was met by a delegation representing The Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust, Canal & River Trust, Powys County Council, The Shropshire Union Canal Society, The Friends of the Montgomery Canal, The Heulwen Trust and TRAMPS as well as other relevant agencies.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

The Friends of the Montgomery Canal is the membership section of the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust and began life in April 2002. The original idea was to enable greater local involvement in supporting the restoration of the Canal.

We are now looking for members who might be interested in getting involved in the Friends’ Management Committee following our Annual General Meeting in February.

Award win for Crickheath

Montgomery Canal - Crickheath Award

Having been shortlisted in August, the current phase of restoration of the Montgomery Canal at Crickheath has now won the 2021 Ground Engineering – Community Engagement Award.

The Ground Engineering awards are the premier national event for geotechnics, engineering geology and geo-environmental engineering. This award is made jointly to Arcadis consulting engineers, Canal & River Trust as the client and the Shropshire Union Canal Society as the contractor.

Schoolhouse Bridge – Can you help?

We hope you have not missed the great news about funding for the Montgomery Canal in Powys. Grants have been offered from the UK Levelling-Up Fund and the Community Resilience Fund.

The money will cover the rebuilding of Walls and Williams Bridges, dredging and bank restoration from Maerdy to Llanymynech, three natures reserves in Powys, plus planning for the restoration of the Vyrnwy Aqueduct and through the A483 crossings at Arddleen and Maerdy.
