Canal Clearance work started south of Crickheath

The Shropshire Union Canal Society started work at the beginning of August on clearing the vegetation on the next dry section of the Montgomery Canal at Crickheath in Shropshire.

This clearance marks a milestone in the recent restoration work as it sees work on a section south of the current restoration efforts and it will facilitate the inspection of the canal bed and walls at Crickheath Wharf to assess remedial work needed.

Volunteers return after the Lockdown

Before the lockdown, the Shropshire Union Canal Society had been making good progress restoring the canal between Lloyds Animal Feeds compound and Crickheath despite the heavy rain at the beginning of March.

During their absence however, the canal had quickly become overgrown and so volunteers had to start by clearing weeds and a fallen tree on the first working party which took place on 24th – 26th July.

Brain of Monty quiz 2020

Yes it’s back! The popular Brain of Monty quiz is back. Raising much needed funds for the ongoing restoration of the Montgomery Canal.

So once again you can have hours of fun deciphering the MONTY clues – however there is a change this year as numbers 18 and 32 have MONT in the question rather than the answer; but remember if not in the question then MONT must appear in the answer – confusing? Well don’t blame me as I have only used the tie-breaker questions from 2018. Not sure why a couple of people got it the wrong way round.

Restoration on the Monty due to resume

The Shropshire Union Canal Society has announced that restoration work on the Montgomery Canal is to resume following the enforced cessation due to Covid 19.

The lockdown followed an incredibly wet winter and seriously affected plans to complete the remaining dry section of the channel, to link the national network with the newly constructed winding hole terminus at Crickheath in 2021. Now, however, planning is taking place to resume activities in August, albeit, with a much more regimented and selective approach than before.

Planning permission a great step forward in restoration of Montgomery Canal, says Trust Volunteers now being recruited

The Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust is pleased to have received planning permission for the reconstruction of Schoolhouse Bridge, near Oswestry, Shropshire.

The Montgomery Canal was abandoned in 1944 along with other parts of the Shropshire Union Canal system and the old canal bridge on Long Lane was demolished when the canal lay derelict. The canal’s restoration started fifty years ago with a major work party in Welshpool drawn from local residents and canal enthusiasts from the Shropshire Union Canal Society and the Waterway Recovery Group (which adopted the name shortly after the event).
