Shropshire Councillors visit the Monty

Following the bid by Powys County Council and CRT (Canal & River Trust) for grant funds to restore sections of the Montgomery Canal in Powys, the unrestored section of the canal in Shropshire was visited by Lezley Picton, Leader of Shropshire Council and Cecilia Motley, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Tourism.

After a trip on the ‘George Watson Buck’ trip-boat at Llanymynech Wharf Visitor Centre, the visitors were taken to Crickheath where volunteers of the Shropshire Union Canal Society have been working to restore one of the most challenging sections they have faced, shown round by the Society’s Project Manager David Carter.

Secretary of State for Wales Supports the Restoration of the Montgomery Canal

Politicians visit the Montgomery Canal 2021

Simon Hart MP, Secretary of state for Wales, has given his support for the restoration of the Montgomery Canal in Wales.

He was invited to visit the canal in Welshpool by Montgomeryshire MP, Craig Williams and Russell George MS. They were welcomed at the Museum wharf by John Dodwell (Chair of the Montgomery Canal Partnership) and Michael Limbrey (Chair of the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust) who described what had been achieved so far largely by volunteers and explained the value of the restoration of this flagship attraction to the community and to tourism for the area.

Montgomery Canal Triathlon returns

As England and Wales emerge from lockdown, plans are being made for this year’s Montgomery Canal Triathlon with arrangements to mitigate coronavirus risks for all involved, on a later date, Saturday 4th September.

Until Covid-19 struck the event had taken place for eight years with entrants from across England and Wales – and further afield – travelling the 35-mile canal by bike, on foot and in canoes. The popular Triathlon raises funds for the restoration of the Montgomery Canal.

Volunteers complete preparations for School House Bridge

There was dramatic progress when volunteers returned to complete their preparations for the reconstruction of Schoolhouse Bridge on the Montgomery Canal south of Crickheath, near Oswestry.

After the crops were harvested, the restoration team were able to access the final field by the bridge site thanks to generous agreement from the farmer. The field was fenced and the track to bypass the construction site was completed.

Building Company supports the restoration of Schoolhouse Bridge

A local building business has offered much needed support to the appeal to rebuild the road bridge over the Montgomery Canal near Oswestry.

Mr Griffiths of Tudor Griffiths Group has agreed to supply building materials for the new bridge at Crickheath near Pant in Shropshire at cost, which will mean that funds raised towards the restoration of the bridge will go much further.
