We hope you have not missed the great news about funding for the Montgomery Canal in Powys. Grants have been offered from the UK Levelling-Up Fund and the Community Resilience Fund.

The money will cover the rebuilding of Walls and Williams Bridges, dredging and bank restoration from Maerdy to Llanymynech, three natures reserves in Powys, plus planning for the restoration of the Vyrnwy Aqueduct and through the A483 crossings at Arddleen and Maerdy.

Could you be a canal charity trustee?

The Shropshire Union Canal Society is looking for up to three new trustees.

For over 50 years the Shropshire Union Canal Society (SUCS) has worked to maintain, improve and restore the Shropshire Union network. It is currently restoring the Montgomery Canal’s dry section south of Oswestry near Crickheath. It is looking for people interested in becoming trustees of its governing body as it prepares for the next phase towards Pant.

Welcome for Mid-Wales Growth Deal bid for Montgomery Canal Restoration

Announcement that the Montgomery Canal is one of the projects that the Growing Mid Wales Board is submitting to the UK and Welsh Governments for support welcomed.

The Restore the Montgomery Canal! Group – which brings together volunteer charities which have worked for years for the revival of the Montgomery Canal – has welcomed the latest development.

Successful Montgomery Canal Triathlon enjoyed by all

After the difficulties of planning through the time of Coronavirus restrictions, the Montgomery Canal Triathlon run by the Friends of the Montgomery Canal on Saturday 4 September was a most successful event.

While many of the 117 entrants were from Shropshire and Montgomeryshire, others came from across the British mainland, some over 200 miles to reach the canal. The oldest to complete all 28 miles were over 80 and the youngest was under 10 years of age.
