Secretary of State for Wales Supports the Restoration of the Montgomery Canal

Politicians visit the Montgomery Canal 2021

Simon Hart MP, Secretary of state for Wales, has given his support for the restoration of the Montgomery Canal in Wales.

He was invited to visit the canal in Welshpool by Montgomeryshire MP, Craig Williams and Russell George MS. They were welcomed at the Museum wharf by John Dodwell (Chair of the Montgomery Canal Partnership) and Michael Limbrey (Chair of the Montgomery Waterway Restoration Trust) who described what had been achieved so far largely by volunteers and explained the value of the restoration of this flagship attraction to the community and to tourism for the area.

Volunteers for Montgomery Canal Triathlon

Montgomery Canal Triathlon volunteers

As lockdown restrictions start to ease further, we are looking for people interested in helping out as a volunteer at the Triathlon.

You will be aware that The Friends of the Montgomery Canal have been prevented from holding the annual Triathlon due to the Coronavirus Pandemic. However, we are now hopeful that the event will take place on 4th September this year. This will of course be reliant on both Welsh and English Government guidelines. Consequently, we are tentatively putting plans in place to hold a Covid safe event.

Montgomery Canal Triathlon returns

As England and Wales emerge from lockdown, plans are being made for this year’s Montgomery Canal Triathlon with arrangements to mitigate coronavirus risks for all involved, on a later date, Saturday 4th September.

Until Covid-19 struck the event had taken place for eight years with entrants from across England and Wales – and further afield – travelling the 35-mile canal by bike, on foot and in canoes. The popular Triathlon raises funds for the restoration of the Montgomery Canal.

Shaping the cut

Restoration work on the Mntgomery Canal 2021

Shropshire Union Canal Society volunteers resumed work in March, continuing the restoration of the 330 metre dry section of the Montgomery Canal, at Crickheath.

When finished, this section of the Montgomery Canal will link the national network of canals, to the winding hole at Crickheath, which is already in water.
